Black History and Tremé Neighborhood Tour
1 hour and 45 minutes
Easy
Learn about jazz at the very site it began. Hear about the roots of NOLA cuisine and culture.
The Black History & Tremé Neighborhood Tour takes you through the vibrant, resilient history of New Orleans’ Tremé neighborhood, one of the oldest African American communities in the United States. This tour celebrates the often-overlooked contributions of both enslaved and free African descendants who shaped the city’s cultural and historical landscape.
You will begin at the iconic Louis Armstrong Park, where you’ll learn about the founding of Nouvelle-Orléans and visit statues that symbolize its layered past. While visiting statues of a few of our historical musical figures, we’ll explore how this culturally rich community became the birthplace of Jazz, forever changing the world of music.
Finally, your journey completes with a walk through the heart of Tremé itself, where you’ll admire its distinct architecture, discuss the challenges of gentrification and rebuilding, and the evolving impact of tourism on this historic neighborhood.
NOTE: An ASL interpreter is available upon request. Please include this accommodation in the notes section when you book your tour.

Learn the back stories of musical legends such as Moses Hogan, Mahalia Jackson, Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden, and more.
Congo Square
Visit the actual site where Jazz was born through West African drum circles held every Sunday since 1724. Stand in one of the few places in the US where enslaved people were allowed to mass congregate; where they got married, held church, and traded wares.
St. Augustine’s Church
Pay your respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Slave on the grounds of St. Augustine’s Church in Tremé, the oldest Black neighborhood in the nation.
North Rampart Street

EXCELLENT Based on 193 reviews Posted on Mohamed EVerified Enlightening tour Or guide Rhodesia was an absolute delight! She was so knowledgeable, and sensitive to the history of the place. 100% would recommend!Posted on Melissa VVerified Wow - Amazing Experience! This tour was so informative. I knew nothing of the history of Voo Doo and what an important role it played in American history. This is definitely worth your while!Posted on JasminVerified Incredible Tour It was my first time visiting New Orleans and I'm so glad I booked this tour during my two-day stay. Malika has a wealth of knowledge and is really engaging. She is very considerate and checked in frequently with the group to ensure people were comfortable and if they could hear/understand, as there were people in the group whose first language was not English.I am so glad I had the opportunity to learn about Voodoo from a High Priestess because as you listen to the history, you can see how those historical threads have been woven into the fabric of New Orleans. It was such a great experience. I highly recommend booking this tour.Posted on Melissa HVerified Must see! A requisite New Orleans tour experience If you want to learn the true spiritual history of new orleans, I cannot recommend this tour enough. Our experience with high priestess Malika was exactly on point. She took extra time to answer our questions and took us on a very educational and informed tour of the Treme and explained many aspects of the African religions & history of New Orleans. I can honestly say that I have never learned so much new information in a 2-hour period.Posted on Brian SVerified Great Tour with Unique Perspective This tour has all the ghost stories you would expect in New Orleans. But it also had a lot of deep history of the background behind how all the legends developed. Our guide Malika was very knowledgeable and had enough knowledge to teach a college level course on New Orleans history. The historical was well rounded, and did not leave out some of the darker sides of how New Orleans was. There were about 14 of us on the tour, a good size where everyone could hear our guide. The walking pace was good for all levels of ability. I highly recommend this tour, it stands out above the rest.Posted on Jessica BVerified Terrific Treme Tour! Latoya was a knowledgeable and friendly guide. She made the history come alive! The tour didn’t involve as much walking as we thought—which was good for my 82-year-old mom! This tour is great for any adults or teens interested in New Orleans’ unique & complex cultural, racial history. Latoya shared lots of great ideas for where to go after the tour to keep exploring. Thank you!Posted on Rosemary GVerified French Quarter history Rhody was an amazing guide! She was sensitive and provided trigger warnings. My friends and I appreciated the way she shared little known history and included some facts about things we were interested in. Highly recommend!Posted on Elle EVerified Best tour ever! Maliki was knowledgeable, witty, engaging and thoughtful! The tour was confined to Congo Square and the Louis Armstrong Park, so those unable to walk or stand for long periods of time because of mobility issues should find this talk tolerable. It was warm and humid that day, and while Malika explained the differences between Louisiana Voodoo, Hoodoo, and Vodoun, she made a point of making sure that we weren’t in direct sunlight.Posted on Greg OVerified Highly recommend for the authentic and heartfelt story telling! Malika was awesome! It's a very unique, authentic perspective. Very real and she is a great story teller bringing the history, cultures and richness of Congo Square to life. Highly recommend!Posted on Gregory SVerified Best. Tour. EVER! I've traveled the world and this was my favorite tour ever! LaToya was AMAZING! VERY knowledgeable and extremely personable - you can tell she truly loves what she does and the tour had a deep impact on I and my family. I cannot recommend LayToya and this tour enough!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
